CSC Warns Against Sharing Sensitive Data on Social Media

As part of the weekly awareness campaign of the "Cyber Pulse" initiative launched by the Cybersecurity Council (CSC), the Council warned in its weekly awareness message against publishing and sharing important or personal data and information across various social media platforms. It emphasized that posting sensitive information on different social networking sites may expose individuals to various types of fraudulent attacks, as such data can be exploited to design targeted and customized scams. Moreover, these practices may lead to violations of personal privacy in cyberspace.

The Council stressed that exercising caution when sharing such information helps reduce cyberattacks and fraudulent activities aimed at stealing assets belonging to individuals, companies, and institutions. Accordingly, it urged individuals to remain vigilant and cautious when dealing with data and information that may be shared online.

CSC further stated that approximately 40% of users have experienced privacy violations as a result of sharing excessive personal details about their lives, families, and other private matters on social media. The weekly awareness message warned that irresponsible sharing of such information significantly increases the likelihood of becoming victims of theft, cyber fraud, and identity theft. It highlighted the importance of remaining constantly cautious when disclosing any financial data or personal information that may contain specific or sensitive details that could be exploited in fraudulent activities.

Under the theme "The Risk of over sharing", the awareness campaign emphasized that even the simplest details, which may appear insignificant to individuals and are shared publicly, can be exploited in fraudulent schemes. The Cybersecurity Council advised users to adopt a set of measures to safeguard privacy and protect data and information in cyberspace. These measures include refraining from sharing detailed information about home and workplace addresses, avoiding the disclosure of personal phone numbers on social media platforms, and exercising caution when posting detailed travel or outing plans. The Council also warned against sharing private and family photos on these platforms.

The weekly awareness message highlighted the risks associated with failing to follow these measures and emphasized the role of individuals in protecting their personal data, preventing identity theft, and avoiding privacy violations. It also stressed the importance of raising awareness about these risks. The "Cyber Pulse" initiative called on individuals to secure their social media accounts and protect their mobile devices and smartphones used daily for personal and professional purposes. It further emphasized the need to keep software updated, restrict access to cameras, microphones, and location services, create strong passwords, use multi-factor authentication, promote safe sharing practices, and adopt smart choices to prevent cyber fraud and ensure a secure digital environment.

The Council emphasized the necessity for individuals to modify their behavior when dealing with information and data online, particularly by consistently verifying that secure methods are used for sharing and ensuring that shared content does not include specific details that may lead to identity theft or privacy breaches. It urged users to avoid sharing data on unsecured platforms, regularly monitor their accounts, and carefully verify incoming messages, especially in light of fraudsters’ increasing use of advanced technologies to target individuals and lure them into disclosing financial, banking, and personal information.

CSC concluded that cybersecurity has become a major challenge in the digital space and that these preventive measures and responsible behaviors, alongside ongoing government efforts, contribute significantly to addressing current digital challenges arising from rapid technological advancements. In this context, the "Cyber Pulse" awareness campaign, launched by the Cybersecurity Council for the second consecutive year on social media platforms, supports the UAE’s continuous efforts to build a secure cyberspace that protects users from growing digital risks and keeps pace with rapid technological developments. This initiative aligns with a comprehensive national vision aimed at strengthening trust in the country’s digital ecosystem, promoting a culture of cybersecurity, enhancing digital awareness among families and individuals, and reinforcing cybersecurity practices to safeguard the safety and privacy of citizens and residents in an era of accelerated digital transformation.
